This is the first time in years of web-surfing that I’ve felt sufficiently moved to post a comment. Thank you, Mr Becker, for an entertaining, informative and uplifting blog (which kept me up until 5.00 a.m. today). Lorraine

Thanks Lorraine, that is a true compliment. Are you the Lorraine that I last saw about 15 ? years ago in Joburg… you were selling artworks to hotels in Dubai if I recall?

Hi Carl, thanks – sadly I’m another (indubitably less interesting) Lorraine…. not connected in the art world at all, but quite passionate about Pierneef.
Funnily enough, we bought a Landrover from a lovely elderly couple on the South Coast of KZN about a dozen years ago and when we went to collect it they invited us in to tea; we walked in to be overwhelmed by a huge Pierneef dominating their living room. It depicted a scene that, I think, was painted in Tahiti or Haiti; he had painted it as a wedding present for either them or a family member – he had been a close family friend. It was fabulously huge, and fabulously Pierneef… the only instance of my ever contemplating turning instantly to a life of crime! They were a truly wonderful couple and richly deserved the gift he painted for them.
I’m fascinated by your Pierneefian journey; as a useless amateur artist I’ve been messing around with versions of the work of Eric Ravilious and Kyffin; I’m shamelessly taking some of their works and inserting my favourite horse into the landscape, just for the fun of it. And for my eyes only – I’m not completely shameless 😉

Hi Lorraine
Very interesting story about the exotic Pierneef. Someone once mentioned to me that he did paintings of South America, which I thought was unlikely but later I heard that his daughter had married a Chilean diplomat, if I remember correctly. So its not impossible that he visited there. I’d love to see an image of that painting, I’m sure its never been reproduced. My best unexpected Pierneefs were seen at the house of a potato farmer in Limpopo – he had about six or seven that he’d acquired over the last 30 years or so!
Thanks for reading and keep up the painting!
